There were approximately 45 people present. (To the best of my recollection, this was a record number in attendance for a regular meeting). The minutes of the May meeting (since June was the outing) were read and approved. The Treasurer's Report was then given and approved. Acknowledgement and thanks were given to those who helped in the organization of the June outing and in the preparation of the food. Harry McElhone, Vice President, told us about a gold dig in North Carolina on the weekend of August 27 at Gold Valley Campground. If anyone is interested in attending this, contact Harry at harrymc1@peoplepc.com and he will give you the particulars. Ben Vaughan then talked about CVGP again participating in the Field Days of the Past, to be held September 17, 18 and 19 in Goochland. (a message was recently sent asking for volunteers to help with this event). This is a very good way to get what our group stands for out in front of the public. Last but certainly not least, Ben told us about a 256 acre parcel of land that is for lease. He went to look at it and talk with the managers and came away favorably impressed. He made an offer for rent. The property is located approximately 3 ½ miles southwest of Dillwyn in Buckingham County. On the property is an old gold mine that operated circa 1852 through 1865. A stream runs through the property. There was then a discussion of who will be able to have access to the land. A proposal was made that MEMBERS HOLDING A CURRENT CARD INDICATING THEY HAD MADE THE $10 CONTRIBUTION would be able to use the land for prospecting--immediate family members could go with them. There was a motion made and it was passed. Camping will also be allowed on this property. The land will be shared with a hunt club so there will be some restrictions we will have to follow during deer hunting season. This matter will be discussed in more detail at the upcoming August 21 meeting. The discussion was then directed to the fact that we needed a Claims Committee. Three members have agreed to serve on that committee, Roland Harris, Randell Worden and Billy Cartwright. There still has not been a definite date set for the dredging class. As soon as we have this information, you will be notified. Last, but not least, a new member Michael Gillespie brought containers of his homegrown blackberries and blueberries. These quickly sold and the proceeds donated to the club. Thanks Michael !! Don't forget the meeting on August 21 – things are starting to happen and you will want to be there to learn all the details. Note: We still have no definite date for a class to qualify us for a dredging permit. As soon as we have this information, we will let you know.
