The Minutes from the May 18, 2002 meeting are: CENTRAL VIRGINIA GOLD PROSPECTORS Minutes of May 18, 2002 Meeting The meeting began at 10:45AM with a moment of silence being observed. There were approximately 20 members present. ANNOUNCEMENT: THE NEXT MEETING WILL BE ON JUNE 8 (second Saturday of the month, instead of the usual 3rd Saturday) at 10:00 AM. The first item on the agenda was a discussion of whether to become a non-profit corporation. A prospective new member, who is also an attorney, spoke about the legalities of whether this was necessary or not. It was concluded that for now the club was small enough that it would retain its present status. Next the subject of membership fees was brought up. It was agreed by vote that a $10 yearly contribution by each member would be instituted. The membership year would run from February through January. A notice regarding this will be sent to everyone on the mailing list. Also, this will also be an opportunity to update our mailing list. Membership cards will be issued when the $10 is received. On August 10 the Small Country Campground is having a fair--we have been invited to put on a panning demonstration. This might be an opportunity to encourage prospective new members and also any ideas on things we could do to generate some funds for the club would be welcome. It was decided that Ned Skinner would check on getting a banner made for the club to display at such functions. The CVGP's non-affiliation with the GPAA was discussed, in particular, whether we needed to rethink the decision to withdraw. Ned Skinner is going to contact the GPAA and get some specifics regarding re-establishing association with them. Dredging in the State of Virginia was brought up, and President Rod Ingalls advised us on his interpretation of the laws. Also, the need to find new sites for prospecting was brought up. We still need to find new areas for members to prospect--ANY IDEAS????? It was voted on and passed that all voting on issues would be done only by those present at a meeting--not by snail mail nor email. Robert Stowe, Treasurer gave his report, which showed a balance in the bank of $2,225.85. The club had received an announcement of a new club forming in NC and it was agreed that a $25 donation would be sent to help them with start-up expenses. The raffle for 2 gold nuggets was held. The meeting was adjourned at 12:30. Sandy Stowe, Secretary I was reviewing the attendance list for the past meetings and see that many of you have not been to a meeting in a long time. There are some things happening that will have an impact on the future of the CVGP club and the input of everyone would be welcome. REMEMBER! It is your organization and your participation is important. You may notice that your incoming email looks a little different this time. I don't profess to be competent at using a computer but one of our members graciously gave me a short lesson. The following is a quote from him: "some email clients (whether it's Outlook Express or Netscape, or some stand alone email app) can be set to automatically add all the addresses visible in incoming email to their Address Book! This would make us all susceptible to the type of email virus that grabs all the names in a person's Address Book, and sends itself to all those people! Being on a Mac, I'm "immune" to those, but I'm thinking of everyone else. Second, having all our addresses visible makes it VERY EASY for someone, with either good intentions or bad, to give all our addresses to places that would send us spam email. Imagine a "disguntled" member giving everbody's address to a bunch of porn sites..." I agree with what he has said and have adopted his suggestion. Hope to see you at the upcoming meeting.
